What is Independence Day and why is it celebrated?

Independence Day is a national holiday in India that commemorates the end of British rule and the partition of the subcontinent in 1947. It is celebrated on August 15 every year with flag hoisting, speeches, and cultural events. The independence movement was led by Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters who resisted the British Empire.

A brief history of India's freedom struggle

British rule in India began in 1757 when, following the British victory at the Battle of Plassey, the English East India Company began exercising control over the country. The East India Company ruled India for 100 years, until it was replaced by direct British rule (often referred to as the British raj) in the wake of the Indian Mutiny in 185758.

The Indian independence movement began during World War I and was led by Mohandas K. Gandhi, who advocated for a peaceful and nonviolent end to British rule. Gandhi launched several campaigns of civil disobedience, such as the Non-Cooperation Movement, the Salt March, and the Quit India Movement, to mobilize millions of Indians against colonial oppression.

The final push for independence came after World War II, when Britain was weakened by its involvement in the war. The Indian National Congress (INC) and the Muslim League (ML) demanded self-government for India, but disagreed on whether India should be divided into two separate nations based on religion. The British government decided to partition India into Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan, which resulted in widespread violence and displacement of millions of people.

On August 15, 1947, India became an independent dominion within the Commonwealth of Nations, with Jawaharlal Nehru as its first prime minister. Pakistan also became an independent dominion on August 14, 1947. Later, India adopted a republican constitution and became a sovereign democratic republic on January 26, 1950.
